Phone Not Charging - Complete Repair Guide
Intermittent charging, loose cable, or completely dead charging port? Learn to diagnose and replace charging ports on Android and iPhone devices.
Symptoms of a Bad Charging Port
- Must hold cable at specific angle to charge
- Charging stops if cable moves slightly
- Cable feels loose in port (wiggles freely)
- "Slow charging" or "Check your charger" warnings
- Works with some cables but not others
- Visible lint or debris in port
- Corrosion or green/black buildup visible
- Port physically damaged or pins bent
Tools Required
- Small Phillips screwdriver (#000 or #00)
- Plastic opening tools/spudgers
- Tweezers (fine point, ESD-safe)
- Soldering iron (temperature controlled, fine tip)
- Solder wick or desoldering pump
- Flux (no-clean type preferred)
- Replacement charging port board/flex
- Isopropyl alcohol 99% and brush
- Heat gun or hair dryer (for adhesive)
- Anti-static mat
Step 1: Verify It's Actually The Port
Exclude simpler fixes first:
Cable Test
- Try 3+ different cables you know work on other devices
- Try USB-A, USB-C, and wireless charging if available
- Try different power sources (wall adapter, laptop USB, car)
Software Check
- Android: Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Battery info)
- Check mA draw - should be 500mA+ when charging
- iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health
- Maximum capacity below 80% can cause charging issues
Lint Removal (Try This First)
- Power off phone completely
- Use toothpick or SIM tool - wood or plastic only
- Gently scrape bottom of charging port
- Remove compacted lint and dust
- Blow compressed air out
- Check with flashlight - should see clean metal contacts
Many charging issues are solved by this simple cleaning!
Step 2: Understand Your Port Type
Port Replacement Types
| Type | Difficulty | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Soldered to mainboard (iPhone, older Android) | Hard | $5-15 part |
| Soldered to charging board (Samsung mid-range) | Medium | $8-20 part |
| Flex cable with connector (most Android) | Easy | $5-15 part |
| Daughterboard module (Pixel, OnePlus) | Medium | $15-40 part |
Step 3: Phone Disassembly
iPhone Procedure
- Remove bottom two pentalobe screws
- Heat screen edges with heat gun (80°C, 3 minutes)
- Use suction cup to lift screen slightly
- Insert plastic pick and slide around edges
- Screen opens like book from left side
- Disconnect battery FIRST
- Then disconnect screen cables
Android Procedure
- Remove back cover screws
- Heat back glass if glued (Samsung, newer phones)
- Use suction cup and plastic pick
- Remove wireless charging coil if present
- Disconnect battery
Always:
- Take photos at each step
- Keep screws organized by size
- Handle flex cables gently
Step 4: Type A - Flex Cable Replacement
Easiest repair type (Samsung A-series, Xiaomi, etc.):
- Locate charging port flex cable
- Remove screws holding flex bracket
- Disconnect flex from mainboard
- Unscrew old charging board from frame
- Transfer any rubber gaskets to new part
- Screw new charging board in place
- Reconnect flex cable
- Reconnect battery
- Power on and test before closing
Success rate: 95%+ for beginners
Step 5: Type B - Daughterboard Replacement
Google Pixel, OnePlus, many modern Androids:
- Remove daughterboard screws
- Disconnect daughterboard flex
- Remove vibrator motor (often attached)
- Transfer speaker mesh to new board
- Install new daughterboard
- Connect all flex cables
- Transfer earpiece mesh if present
Common Mistake: Forgetting to transfer speaker mesh causes muffled sound
Step 6: Type C - Soldered Port Replacement
Requires soldering skills (iPhone, some budget Androids):
Wick Method
- Apply flux to solder joints
- Place solder wick on joint
- Heat wick from above with iron
- Wick absorbs old solder
- Repeat until pads are clean
Hot Air Method (for micro USB ports)
- Cover nearby components with foil tape
- Apply flux around port legs
- Heat with hot air gun:
- Airflow: Medium
- Temp: 350-380°C
- Distance: 2cm
- Heat for 60-90 seconds
- Use tweezers to lift old port
- Clean pads with wick
Installing New Port
- Align new port pins with pads
- Tack one corner pin
- Verify alignment with magnifier
- Solder all data pins
- Solder mounting legs last
- Inspect for bridges
Step 7: Waterproofing Restoration
Restore water resistance if your phone was IP-rated:
- Replace adhesive gaskets
- Use speaker/microphone mesh from old port
- Apply 3M double-sided adhesive strips to back cover
- Heat seal after reassembly
Note: DIY repair reduces but doesn't eliminate water resistance. Never intentionally expose repaired phone to water.
Step 8: Testing Your Repair
- Connect battery
- Power on phone
- Check battery percentage
- Plug in charger
- Wait 30 seconds
- Verify charging indicator appears
- Leave charging for 5 minutes
- Verify percentage increased
- Test data transfer to computer
- Reassemble if all tests pass
If it doesn't charge:
- Check battery connector seated properly
- Inspect for solder bridges
- Test with different cable
Common Issues and Fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Charges very slowly | Only power pins connected | Check data pins soldering |
| Connects/disconnects | Loose cable | Install new rubber gasket |
| No fast charging | Wrong/cheap replacement | Use OEM quality port |
| Heats while charging | Short in new port | Replace again, check PCB |
Part Sources and Costs
- iPhone: MobileSentrix, InjuredGadgets ($15-30)
- Samsung: Parts4cells, eBay ($8-20)
- Xiaomi/Chinese: AliExpress ($3-10)
- OEM quality: Look for flex cable grade marks
- Avoid: Super cheap ($2) eBay parts - fail in weeks
